You can get consistent results by using the same chat over again following the same steps. It also can be helpful to give more context. Such as in the sample results below.

Inevitably a few words are missed by Claude or it might give the wrong word so be sure to double check. Usually the clearer the picture the better the results. You can also use Gemini or ChatGPT, but Claude typically misses fewer words.

This is a great way to go over the tricky vocab words from your reading! One way to then level up your newly acquired words is for a trained teacher to guide you how to correctly use them grammatically and culturally. Teachers can provide real-life examples, and give you practice in using the words in your daily speech. We welcome you to sign up for your classes with one of our teachers for that!

Encourage them to talk about each item in the picture. Record them as they do it.

Listen to the recording with them, pausing to ask about anything you don’t understand. This is best done fully in Urdu. Just like in your native tongue, you can define a word using other words. Try to have them define or explain things fully in Urdu.

After finishing the whole book, have your teacher or friend record the book as one story. Just like with each page, go back through the recording with them. They may switch to a storytelling mode, saying things differently from when they were focused just on an individual page. They might even switch tenses, allowing you to note how and when they do it.

Afterwards, take the opportunity to tell the story yourself (see more below). Don’t worry about getting it perfect or saying it how they said it, just try your best.

(2) Use this to get yourself talking:

With an Urdu-speaking teacher or friend, open the first page and say as much as you can about the picture. Point out things you know. Ask questions about things you aren’t sure about. Ask “why” or opinion questions to engage with your friend in the language. Just make sure it is all in Urdu! You might surprise yourself how easily you can spend 5-10 minutes just talking about one page. Go through and do the same with each page of the story, talking as much as you can about the details of each picture.

Once you have finished each page, go back and try to tell the book as a story. The aim is not perfection but further practice of what you have learned on the individual pages.

After listening to the native speaker’s recording of the story, try to tell the story again. Don’t worry about getting it perfect or saying it how they said it. Just try your best.

It might take a few hours (can be spaced out between classes) to do these learning activities with all the pages of a wordless book, but it is very valuable learning time.

Being in a place where Urdu is the language of daily life adds so much breadth and depth to the learning experience, and now it is easier than before to visit Pakistan due to visa policy update.

I came to Pakistan on a tourist visa and have been taking classes at Zubaan. It has been challenging but fun to try out my newly acquired knowledge in real world situations. The people I encounter on the street or in shops or taxis use phrases that expand my vocabulary. They aren’t trained like my instructor to structure their questions or answers within the framework of what I have already learned.

I experienced many communication failures, but the thrill of successfully getting my meaning across makes the struggle worth it. People are usually surprised and pleased that I am interested enough in their culture to try to learn the language.

If you have considered coming over here for work or as a tourist, there is good news for you related to getting a visa. I found it to be a somewhat daunting process when I first applied for my tourist visa. However, in August of this year (2024), the Pakistani government decided to streamline the process for certain categories of applicants and remove the processing fee for the citizens of 126 countries, listed on the government website. All you need is a passport and photo!

The visas are called Visa Prior to Arrival (Business) and Visa Prior to Arrival (Tourist). There is a third category for Sikh pilgrims. The visas, barring any complications, will be granted in 24 hours. This welcome new policy is part of the Pakistani government’s efforts to attract more businesspeople and to build up the tourist industry in this beautiful country.

Please check the government website, links below, to see if you qualify for this new plan.

Urdu is mutually intelligible with Hindi – the two languages share 70% of beginner vocabulary along with shared phonology, syntax, and grammar. This would make Urdu-Hindi the 3rd most spoken language in the world with nearly 1 billion speakers. Practically speaking, that means a Urdu speaker can understand a Bollywood film and make friends with a Hindi speaker.

Urdu is the national language of Pakistan, the fifth most populated country in the world. There are over 80 people groups and 70 languages in Pakistan. Despite this great diversity, Urdu is the gateway language that unifies Pakistan. Moreover, you will also find large groups of first language speakers of Urdu in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and diaspora communities throughout the Middle East.

Furthermore, Urdu has a rich historical heritage and is deeply intertwined with the culture of Central and South Asia. Learning Urdu can lead to discoveries and insights into the history, literature, traditions, and worldviews of these regions.

Are you ready to take the jump into the beautiful and widely-spoken language of Urdu? Do you want to have a connection with nearly 1 billion living individuals along with a rich history and culture? Do you plan to visit or live in Pakistan or India?

…. and we learned that we cannot used Pakistani textbooks.

from DAWN Newspaper

DAWN recently published an interesting article written by two Pakistanis who started teaching Urdu as a Foreign Language in America. Their insights are both fascinating and disturbing at the same time. Here are just a few snippets of their article:

The US Department of State considers the learning and teaching of Urdu “critical to national and economic prosperity of America.” Urdu is considered one of the “critical languages” included in the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) programme funded by the Department of State. …..
Most Urdu language textbooks being used in American classrooms are written either by scholars of Indian origin or are collaborative efforts of American and Indian-origin scholars. We are yet to come across any authoritative textbook of Urdu as a foreign language written by a Pakistani scholar.

Visit this link to read their full article on Dawn.

We at Zubaan have similarly discovered that their is a lack of Urdu textbooks for foreign students, especially coming out of Pakistan. This is why we have made it our mission to develop materials (find here).

What about you? What materials, books or resources would you find helpful for your language learning journey? Leave a comment and share your thoughts!

Over the last six to twelve months we have seen an interesting development at Zubaan Training: we have been flooded with inquiries to study Urdu by Pakistanis. At first we were taking a bit by surprise – after all, our focus has been on teaching Urdu as a foreign language, i.e., teaching Urdu to people who do not have any background or connection to the Urdu language.

The students that approach us can be divided into three general groups:

Overseas Pakistanis (and their children in particular)

Pakistanis living in Pakistan who have studied almost exclusively in English/speak English in their home

Pakistanis whose native tongue is not Urdu (e.g., Sindhis, Pathans, Punjabis, etc.)

For us, it highlights once again the need and importance of promoting Urdu as a Second Language learning – but not just for foreigners. It has been our joy to be able to do so!

Recently, DAWN published an article, which also speak to this with the title “Understanding the linguistic journey of Pakistan’s children”.
What is Urdu?

Urdu, or more precisely Modern Standard Urdu – is Indo-Iranian language spoken mainly in South Asia. It is a Persianized standard register of the Hindustani language and it’s spoken variation is mutually intelligent with Standard Hindi. It is the official national language and lingua franca of Pakistan, but widely used in other countries, in particular India.

Urdu is the 21st most spoken first language in the world, with approximately 66 million speakers. According to Ethnologues’s 2017 estimates, Urdu, along with standard Hindi and the languages of the Hindi belt, is the 3rd most spoken language in the world, with approximately 329 million native speakers, and almost 700 million total speakers.

The Origin of Urdu

Urdu, like Hindi, is a form of Hindustani. Around 75% of Urdu words have their roots in Sanskrit and Prakrit. Because Persian-speaking sultans ruled the Indian subcontinent for several years, Urdu was influenced by Persian and to a lesser extent, Arabic, which have contributed to about 25% of Urdu’s vocabulary. Although the word Urdu is derived from the Turkic word ordu (army) Turkic borrowings in Urdu are minimal.

The name Urdu was first used by the poet Ghulam Hamadani Mushafi around 1780. From the 13th century until the end of the 18th century Urdu was commonly known as Hindi. The language was also known by various names such as Hindavi or Dehlavi. Hindustani in Persian script was used by Muslims and Hindus but was current chiefly in Muslim-influenced society. Hindustani was promoted in British India by British policies to counter the previous emphasis on Persian. This triggered a Hindu backlash in northwestern India, which argued that the language should be written in the native Devanagari script. This literary standard called “Hindi” replaced Urdu as the official language of Bihar in 1881, establishing a sectarian divide of “Urdu” for Muslims and “Hindi” for Hindus, a divide that was formalized with the division of India and Pakistan after independence.

Speakers & Geographic Distribution of Urdu

There are over 100 million native speakers of Urdu in India and Pakistan together: there were 52 million and 80.5 million Urdu speakers in India. However, a knowledge of Urdu allows one to speak with far more people than that, because Hindustani, of which Urdu is one variety, is the third most commonly spoken language in the world, after Mandarin and English.

Orange: States where Urdu is the official language
Yellow: States where Hindi is the official language

In Pakistan, Urdu is mostly learned as a second or a third language as nearly 93% of Pakistan’s population has a native language other than Urdu. Despite this, Urdu was chosen as a token of unity and as a lingua franca so as not to give any native Pakistani language preference over the other. Urdu is therefore spoken and understood by the vast majority in some form or another. However, the people from differing provinces may have different indigenous languages, as from the fact that it is the “base language” of the country.

Although most of the population is conversant in Urdu, it is the first language of only an estimated 7% of the population who are mainly Muslim immigrants (known as Muhajir in Pakistan) from different parts of South Asia. The regional languages are also being influenced by Urdu vocabulary. There are millions of Pakistanis whose native language is not Urdu, but because they have studied in Urdu medium schools, they can read and write Urdu along with their native language. Most of the nearly five million Afghan refugees of different ethnic origins who stayed in Pakistan for over twenty-five years have also become fluent in Urdu. With such a large number of people(s) speaking Urdu, the language has acquired a peculiar Pakistani flavor further distinguishing it from the Urdu spoken by native speakers and diversifying the language even further. This variation of Urdu is sometimes referred to as Pakistani Urdu

In India, Urdu is spoken in places where there are large Muslim minorities or cities that were bases for Muslim Empires in the past. Some Indian schools teach Urdu as a first language and have their own syllabi and exams. Urdu is also one of the officially recognized languages in India and the official language of Jammu and Kashmir, one of the two official languages of Telangana and has the status of “additional official language” in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and the national capital, New Delhi.

Outside South Asia, it is spoken by large numbers of migrant South Asian workers in the major urban centers of the Persian Gulf countries. Urdu is also spoken by large numbers of immigrants and their children in the major urban centers of the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Germany, Norway, and Australia.

Are Urdu & Hindi the same language?

There is a clear similarity between Urdu and Hindi, and speakers of the two languages can easily understand one another if both sides refrain from using specialized vocabulary. The grammar and core vocabulary are essentially identical. Thus, linguistis usually count them as one single language. There is one obvious difference though: Standard Urdu is usually written in the Nastaliq style of the Persian alphabet and relies heavily on Persian and Arabic as a source for technical and literary vocabulary, whereas Standard Hindi is conventionally written in Devanagari and draws on Sanskrit.

Linguists therefore contend that Urdu and Hindi are considered two different languages for socio-political reasons. Religious nationalism since the partition of British India and continued communal tensions therefore explain why native speakers of both Hindi and Urdu frequently assert them to be distinct languages, despite the numerous similarities between the two in a colloquial setting.

(For more information see “The Hindi-Urdu Controversy”) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindi%E2%80%93Urdu_controversy

The Writing System of Urdu

As mentioned before, one the main differences between “Hindi” and “Urdu” is the writing system.

Urdu Alphabet with Roman & Devanagari

Urdu is written right-to left in an extension of the Persian alphabet, which is itself an extension of the Arabic alphabet. Urdu is written with the Nastaliq style of Persian calligraphy. Nastaliq is notoriously difficult to typeset, so Urdu newspapers were hand-written by masters of calligraphy until the late 1980s.

Hindi on the other hand is written in Devanagari script. Most recently in India, Urdu speakers have also adopted Devanagari for publishing Urdu periodicals and have innovated new strategies to mark Urdu in Devanagari as distinct from Hindi in Devanagari.

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urdu

Although Urdu is Pakistan’s national language, an interesting debate that often resurfaces is that the native speakers of Urdu hardly constitute 10 […]

Although Urdu is Pakistan’s national language, an interesting debate that often resurfaces is that the native speakers of Urdu hardly constitute 10 per cent of Pakistan’s population.
(Dr. Rauf Parekh, Professor of Urdu at Karachi University – DAWN NewsArticle August 19,2013)

Pakistan is a country with myriads of cultures and languages and yet Urdu has somehow managed to become the “official” language. So it is obvious that foreigners living, working or studying in Pakistan would study Urdu – rather than any other regional language like Sindhi, Punjabi, Balochi or Pashto.

So why is this important and how does it affect foreigners learning Urdu? Here come just a few personal observations and thoughts. I’d love to hear your experiences – do you agree with me? What has your experience been? Please leave a comment below!

1.It is hard to learn “pure” Urdu

It is up for debate if there is such a thing as “pure” Urdu, but most will agree that it is challenging to find speakers of “pure” Urdu. In Karachi, which is the home of the largest amoung of “Urdu-speakers” this is not as apparent as in other provinces and of course smaller cities in Sindh.

….Dr Atash Durrani, a research scholar and an educationist, ……believes that Urdu cannot be called anybody’s ‘mother tongue’ in true sense of the word as it is very difficult to determine ‘Urdu’s native speakers’. Most of the speakers of Urdu in fact speak ‘Pakistani Urdu’ and they know or speak another language — an indigenous or local language or a regional dialect of Urdu — and the statistics showing the numbers and ratio of native speakers of Urdu are misleading, says Dr Durrani in his new book Ilm-i-tadrees-i-Urdu. He says that by the number of people, who ‘speak’ Urdu, Urdu is ranked third amongst the languages of the world after English and Chinese. He admits that Unesco has dubbed it as “Hindustani”, which includes both Urdu and Hindi, but if Urdu and Hindi are put together, Urdu or Hindustani would be world’s second largest language by the number of speakers…….
(from DAWN Newspaper; Dr. Rauf Parekh, https://www.dawn.com/news/1036733)

So – simply put: if it is hard to find “pure Urdu-speakers” it is hard to find good Urdu teachers, i.e. people who are models of good spoken and written Urdu, and who have a large repartoire of Urdu vocabulary.

Especially as I moved from beginning to intermediate level, I experienced challenges with my language teachers, who are not “Urdu-speaking”. E.g. they would not know some words and had to look them up in the dictionary themselves. At times they included Punjabi or Pashto words, without being aware that this was not Urdu. Most frequently I noticed that they misspelled words and pronunciated certain sounds differently.

2. Not everyone understands “proper” Urdu

So, let’s say you managed to master “proper” Urdu – then the question arises who can understand you?

Since many Pakistanis speak other regional languages, too:

Simple Urdu that is concerned with daily life and the immediate surroundings is used. This is in particular true of sabzi wallahs (“vegetable sellers”) or darsis (“tailors”) who frequently come from the Norther Areas to the large cities such as Karachi for work. They know how to do their job in Urdu, although a strong accent is visible, but if you would try to have an in depth conversation, they’d be at a loss.

If they don’t know the Urdu word they will either use the word from their regional language or revert to English. A typical example are Urdu numbers, which – for some weird reason – are pretty complicated.

They sometimes don’t understand the “proper” Urdu word or are surprised when they hear it. I recently had this experience when I used an Urdu word and Pakistani asked me what it meant and where i had learnt it. It was a quite amusing situation At another occasion, I was attending a wedding and used the word “mansuba” instead of the word “plan” and “fahrist” instead of the English word “list”. The rest of the evening my hosts went around telling their friends how amazing my Urdu is and that I used words they don’t commonly use.

Does this mean there is no point in trying to learn “proper” Urdu?

Not at all! The above observations are actually not uncommon issues that lingua franca’s and multi-lingual societies face. Language is a living thing and always in flux. Don’t get too hung up on what is correct and “proper”, and focus on understanding others and getting your point across.

My advice: learn the language of the people you usually interact with. After all -the purpose of langauge is to communicate with others. This will be different whether you are a business man interacting with highly educated speakers in Karachi, an international student in Turkey learning Urdu, or a housewife in a small Punjabi neighborhood in Multan.

(By the way: for the language-geeks among you I can highly recommend the following short TED-ED Video that explains the differences between a descriptive and prescreptive approach to language:
https://ed.ted.com/lessons/does-grammar-matter-andreea-s-calude)
